Offline mode: QA test guide
DQR app (QA build, Android or iPhone) · classroom display at dqr-qa-web.azurewebsites.net
How to set up offline mode on the phone and the classroom computer, teach a lesson with no internet, and upload the answers afterwards. Follow the steps in order.
How offline mode works
The phone and the classroom computer each download the class’s lessons while there is internet. In class, neither needs the internet: the computer shows the lesson from its saved copy, and the phone scans the question’s QR code and the pupils’ cards. The answers upload when the internet is back.
- Phone: turn on Enable offline. The class’s lessons download (a cloud-with-a-tick icon appears beside each).
- Computer: on the DQR website, click Turn on offline mode and sign in with the same account. It downloads the same lessons into the browser (the bar says Offline mode on · N lessons ready).
- Phone: open the lesson and tap Scan. It shows the website and a six-character code.
- Computer: type that code into Enter your quiz code. The lesson opens from the browser’s saved copy, with a QR code next to the question.
- Phone: point the camera at that QR (it checks both show the same question), then scan the pupils’ cards. Answers are saved on the phone.
- Phone: once it has internet, the answers upload by themselves (tap Upload at the top right if it shows). The label goes Pending → Uploading… → Connected, and the results are in DQR as normal.
The label at the top right of the phone
| Connected | Internet on, nothing waiting to upload. |
|---|---|
| Offline | No internet. Downloaded lessons still work. |
| Pending | No internet, and answers are saved on the phone waiting to upload. Tapping it shows the details and tries to upload in case the internet is back. |
| Upload | Internet is back and answers are waiting. Tap it to send them now (they also go by themselves when the app next reaches DQR). |
| Uploading… | Sending the answers. It goes back to Connected when done. |
Where the computer keeps the lessons
The computer saves the lessons in the web browser (Chrome or Firefox), on that computer. Nothing is installed. They stay there after the browser is closed or the computer restarts, and nobody needs to be signed in to the browser. Use the same browser and the same normal window to sync before class and to teach.
These won’t have the lessons (sync again in the browser you will teach from):
- switching to a different browser (synced in Chrome, teaching in Firefox, or the other way round) or a different browser profile or computer user;
- an Incognito, Private or Guest window: anything saved there is deleted when it closes;
- a browser whose history and site data were cleared, or a school computer set to wipe browser data on sign-out;
- the live DQR site, if you synced on the QA site (each website keeps its own copy).
After the browser is closed, the bar says Sign in to sync. Saved lessons still open without signing in; sign in only to download new or changed lessons. The computer never stores pupil names or answers.
Before you start
Both devices- Phone: install the latest DQR QA build (TestFlight on iPhone, or the APK you were sent on Android).
- Account: the QA app uses its own test server, so your normal DQR login won’t work in it, and there are no shared QA test accounts. Create your own in the app (you can use the same email as your normal account; it’s a separate account with its own password). On the sign-in screen tap Sign Up, enter your name, your real email address and a password (at least 6 characters), then tap Send Verification Code. Enter the code from the email and tap Create Account. Your new account already has a Demo Class with 30 test pupils. (Need a second account? Many email providers accept
yourname+dqr2@…as a separate address.) - Lessons: assign a few quizzes to Demo Class: Quizzes → open a quiz → Assign → Demo Class. Pick ones with follow-up questions if you can, for example Year 2 Demo, Year 4 Demo, Introduce zero, Count in 2s, Multiples of 10 and Doubles. Assign more the same way if you run out.
- Pupil cards: on a second screen (another laptop, tablet or phone, not the classroom computer), open dqr.eedi.com/test. It shows a set of test pupil cards. Open it while you still have internet; it keeps working once the internet is off, as long as you don’t reload it.
- Computer: use Google Chrome in a normal window (not Incognito).
- Both devices have internet to start with.
Phone: turn offline on and download lessons
Phone · online- Settings → Offline → switch Enable offline on (if it is already on, leave it).
- Classes → your class. Each upcoming lesson shows a spinner, then a cloud-with-a-tick icon beside its date. This can take a minute.
- If any lesson has no icon after a minute, go to Settings and tap Download all lessons, then check again.
Computer: turn on offline mode
Computer · online- Open dqr-qa-web.azurewebsites.net. It is the normal home page, with one extra bar under the code box.
- Click Turn on offline mode and sign in with the same QA account as the phone.
- Wait while the bar counts up (Syncing lesson 1 of N…) until it finishes.
Switch the internet off on both devices
Both devices- Phone: turn on Airplane mode (Wi-Fi and mobile data both off).
- Computer: turn Wi-Fi off or unplug the network cable.
- Computer: reload the DQR page.
Teach a full lesson with no internet
Both devices · offlineOpen the lesson on both devices
- Phone: Classes → your class → open an unfinished lesson. It opens straight away.
- Phone: tap Scan. The phone shows Scan the question on the computer, with the website and a six-character code. (The code is also on the Display button at the top of the lesson.)
- Computer: type that code into Enter your quiz code and press the arrow. The lesson opens full screen, with the question QR on the right.
- Phone: point the camera at the QR code beside the question on the computer. The pupil-card scanner opens by itself.
Scan and move through the lesson
- Phone: point the camera at the test cards on the second screen until they are counted, then tap Done. The answers show on the phone.
- Computer: click Next ›. Test cards: change the answers. Phone: Scan → question QR → cards → Done. Repeat for at least 3 questions.
- Follow-up question: on a question that has one, click Follow-up 1 on the computer, then tap Scan on the phone and scan the QR. The phone switches to the follow-up.
- Scanning the same question twice: without clicking Next on the computer, tap Scan again and scan the same QR. The phone asks Already scanned: tap Cancel. Then try again and choose Scan again: the scanner opens.
- Restart: halfway through, close the app fully and open it again. Open the same lesson: it continues where you were and your answers are still there.
- Phone: Finish lesson.
Still offline: find the finished lesson
Phone · offline- Phone: close the app fully and open it again (still in Airplane mode).
- Classes → your class → Results. The lesson you just finished is listed. Open it: your scanned answers are there.
- Look at the label at the top right: it now says Pending, because answers are waiting to upload.
- Tap Pending. The summary opens and says Answers waiting to upload.
Reconnect and upload
Phone · online- Turn Airplane mode off and stay in the app.
- Open any screen (for example go back to Classes). As soon as the app reaches DQR, the answers start uploading by themselves: the label shows a spinner with Uploading…, then Connected.
- If the label says Upload instead, tap it to send the answers. If it still says Pending, tap it once.
- Open the lesson’s results: every answer you scanned is there.
- Computer: turn Wi-Fi back on and reload the page. The bar goes back to Offline mode on · N lessons ready.
Edge cases
Both devices- Lesson never opened before, no internet: Airplane mode on → open a downloaded lesson you have not taught. It opens from the download with no error.
- Internet drops mid-lesson: with internet, open a lesson and scan once. Turn Airplane mode on and keep teaching: the app carries on from the download. Turn it off again: the answers upload.
- No computer available: use this when there is no classroom computer showing the lesson (for example the projector is broken, or you read the question out). In a lesson tap Scan → Scan pupils without the computer: it skips the question-QR check and opens the pupil scanner for the question showing on the phone, so make sure the phone is on the right question. Try it on a main question and on a follow-up question: after Done, the answers are saved against the question that was on the phone.
- Lesson started online, finished offline: with internet, open a downloaded lesson, teach one question and scan it. Then turn the internet off on both devices, open the same lesson on the computer with the phone’s code, and carry on: scanning the computer’s question QR works and the lesson continues.
- Remove one download: a lesson’s ••• → Remove download: the icon disappears. Then ••• → Download for offline: spinner, then the icon is back.
- Remove everything, then download everything: Settings → Remove all downloads → confirm. Then tap Download all lessons: every upcoming lesson downloads again.
- Wrong code on the computer: computer offline, type
ABCDEF→ it says the lesson is not downloaded on this computer. - One setting for both devices: with internet, turn Enable offline off on the phone → reload the computer page: Offline mode is off. Click Turn on on the computer → close and reopen the phone app: Enable offline is on again.
- Computer, after closing the browser: close Chrome completely and open the DQR page again. The bar shows N lessons ready on this computer and Sign in to sync. Sign in: it syncs the lessons again.
Known limitations
- Offline, the Library tab also lists the quizzes behind your downloaded lessons. It should only show quizzes you made.
- “Quiz”, “lesson” and “assignment” are used for the same thing in different places.
- If the phone is left untouched when the internet comes back, the label keeps saying Pending until you tap it, open a screen or bring the app to the front. This is by design.
- Each question needs two scans on the phone: the computer’s question QR, then the pupils’ cards.
- The offline display has no Reveal answer or explanation button, the same as the online display. Pupil names never appear on the computer.
- Every assigned lesson is downloaded, which can take a while for a class with many lessons.
